The
Effects of Technology on People
Technology has been growing and changing over the past
century. Back then factories were run by people. Since
there was not a lot of technology back then, a lot of people where active.
Robotic devices have been taking peoples jobs. Technology has and still is
today causing unhealthy behaviors like low self-esteem and depression. It also
has been taking over peoples social lives. Unemployment, unhealthy
effects like depression/ low self-esteem, and no social interaction, are the
effects of technology on people.
One of the effects of technology on people is
unemployment. Technology is replacing people’s jobs in factories. In the
article “Digital Library and Archives,” author Theodore Lewis states “companies
are finding it possible, mainly because of enabling technologies, to lay off
experienced workers” (Lewis 3). Technology is changing us and changing this
nation in a negative way. Once people lose their jobs they are what you would
call helpless. People used to work in car factories; however, robotic machines
replaced those people’s jobs and therefore, caused unemployment. Technology has
caused thousands of factories workers unemployment.
Another effect of technology on people is unhealthy
effects like depression/ low self-esteem. This is a wide spread effect that is
going on today. It is proven that technology can cause depression and low
self-esteem on people. In the article “How Technology Effects Americans Health,”
author Alice Martin states that “Humans have begun to fall into the trance of a
sluggish lifestyle; working, eating, watching TV, and sleeping. No wonder
depression, low self esteems, and other mental ailments have arisen” (Martin
2).
This basically means that people are consumed with technology that it is
causing them to have depression and low self-esteem. Another health factor that
technology is causing is obesity. In the article “How Technology Effects
Americans Health,” author Alice Martin states that, “It has huge contributed to
the obesity epidemic, particularly child obesity. In the past 25 years obesity
rates in children have almost tripled. Approximately 26% of children between
the ages of 2-17 are considered overweight or obese” (Martin 1). Technology is destroying us and most
importantly our health.
Another effect that has on people is that there is no
social interaction with people. Technology is taking over people and the gift
of meeting someone and talking to them face to face. With all of the new
technology and all the SNS (Social Network Sites) people talk to other people
on the SNS sites all day. In the article “How Technology Effects Americans
Health,” author Alice Martin states that “Social interaction is a fundamental
human need” (Martin 2). She also states
that “people have begun isolating themselves with these devices; favoring
technological entertainment over bonding with friends or family members”
(Martin 2) Technology has isolated us; therefore, some people do not know how
to socially interact with people, or they forgot the meaning of talking to
people face to face.
Technology has done many things to people. Some of those
effects consist of unemployment, health issues such as low self-esteem and
depression. Another effect of technology is that there is no social interaction
with other people. Technology has affected millions of people in the U.S.
positively and negatively. Most importantly, it has affected people negatively
and it needs to be changed. People can make a difference by taking action, and
informing people about what technology is doing to this country. It needs to be
done.

Technology
It was September third, 2013.
I arrived at work and my boss tells
me that
He is letting me go because I have
been replaced
by a machine.
That was the most shocking day of
my life.
I arrived back at my house with
nothing to do.
With nothing to do I decide to
watch TV, play on my playstation,
and check my facebook status for
the past month. So for the past several months
I notice that something just doesn’t
feel right with me.
I
feel… DEPRESSED………
and I ran out of glee.
Some
days I just sit there in my chair
staring
into space with nothing to do thinking of how I arrived there.
Because
of this problem that I have I decided
to go and see a doctor.
The
doctor tells me that I have come
down
with a case of depression
and LOW SELF
ESTEEM.
With
depression… and low self esteem what can this mean?
I have noticed that I haven’t been
real social with
people since I lost my job. What
has happened to me?
Technology has ruined my life!
I asked myself
“Does technology really help us?”
The answer to this questions is NO;
technology
is hurting us as Americans and we
need to fix this
MONSTER that we have
created.

Dear Editor and Chief:
My name is Joeseph Costa and I am a sophomore at Early
College High School in Conway SC.
I am writing to address the impact of technology on
American’s social lives, health, and jobs. Today’s technology has impacted
Americans in a negative way. Americans today are falling into a trance of just
working, eating, watching TV or playing video games, and sleeping. From this,
American people have started being diagnosed with depression and low self
esteem symptoms. It has been proven that corporations are eliminating more than
two million jobs annually.
This is not helping the American people at all because this is
causing people to loose their jobs. My view on the technology is that people
should understand the negative outcomes of the new technology. In order to
change Americans lives and health people need to know what the technology has
done to us.
Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate your help hope
to hear from you soon
Sincerely,
Joeseph Costa

Technology Affecting
Our Lives
Technology has a harmful effect on our health, approximately
26% of children between the ages of 2-17 are considered overweight or
obese. As you can see technology has
been impacting or affecting our society in a negative way. People get addicted
to video games, phones, and tablets, and do not want to go outside and throw a
football or hangout with friends. A lot of people don’t know that technology
can ruin there social skills and jobs. Even though technology has its positives
it has its negatives too. Another example is that a lot of people use the
social network sites like facebook and twitter. It kind of takes away peoples
social skills. I’m not trying to that technology is a bad thing and people shouldn’t
use it, but I’m telling the negative impacts of it. Technology has an impact on
Americans social life, health, and our jobs.
Today’s
technology is having an impact on our social life and health. This is because author
Alice Martin states in her article that “in the past 25 years obesity rates in
children have almost tripled.” (Martin pg.4) Another reason why it impacts our
social lives is because technology has made an inactive lifestyle for us. Also
social interaction is one of the needs us Americans need in life. A lot of
social talking is done online now because of technology and is changing the way
people use their social skills. Technology has made a lifestyle for people that
we have fallen into a trance of just working, eating, watching TV or playing
video games, and sleeping. From this people have started getting depression and
low self esteem symptoms.
Technology has impacted Americans jobs in many ways. One
way is that computerized technology is taking the jobs of workers in the
manufacturing factories. Technology has also taken over the car manufacturing unit machines which
has been taken over most of the job. Global unemployment has now
reached its highest level since the great depression. Martin states “it has found
that corporations are eliminating more than 2 million jobs
annually.” (Martin pg.3) Technology has changed over the past few years and is
taking peoples jobs. Even though technology has helped people’s jobs it is
still taking their jobs as well.
This topic is how
technology impacts Americans social lives, their health, and their jobs. I
would like to explore this topic into more detail because technology is
important to people’s lives and they need to know about the negative impacts of
it. Also people need to know how it affects there lives, health, and there
jobs. I think that my topic is an important topic because in today’s society it
revolves around technology, and it is a part of our lives.
